Greek Mythology/Theogony

It is a common mistakenness to think the ancient Greeks believed in a pantheon of "gods".  The personalization of the "gods" arose in recited poems of muses and ancient popular fiction, and was based on surviving but distorted remnants of earlier scientific principles.  This is especially clear regarding the gods derivative of Nyx (the sub-conscious).

Nyx has two derivatives ("children" in pantheon terminology), Hypnos (Sleep), and Thanatos (Death).

Hypnos has two derivatives, Endymion (trance) and Oneiroi (dreams).

It is popular to think that the ancient Greeks believed that the "sun-god" Helios drove his golden chariot across the sky each day, as if it were not known that it was the rotation of the Earth that produced the alternation of day and night.  It is also popular to ascribe to Nyx the attribute of being "goddess of the night" and this is because it is in the dark of night that most people sleep and enter the alternate domain of the Dreamscape, but the "first-born" child of Hypnos is Endymion, the trance state of hypnotic suggestion, which occurs most often in the daytime.

Hypnotism takes the subject into their sub-conscious, just as sleep does.  This is why the hypnotist suggests that the subject is getting sleepy, their eyelids are getting heavy.  Once connected to their sub-conscious the subject has access to memories tucked away out of conscious sight, and to prior feelings associated with events that the conscious mind does not want to deal with.

In the dream state, the sub-conscious struggles with suppressed feelings.  These are called The Oneiroi, a multitude of aspects, some of which are Momus (blame), Moros (doom), Apate (deception), Eris (discord), Philotes (attraction), Pseudologos (lies), and Nemesis (enemies).  These and other emotional aspects are played out in the "Dreamscape", an alternate domain in sharp contrast to the reality of conscious life, but within which all people find themselves to exist.  The Dreamscape is not in the mind of the individual, the individual mind goes into the vast commonly shared Dreamscape.

The Dreamscape is shaped by Morpheus, who has the power to "morph" dream images, and has two helpers in constructing the Dreamscape; Icelos who conjures beasts and living things, and Phantasos who supplies the inanimate scenery and props.

The Dreamscape is in continuous existence outside the individual, and combines dreamers as their brains are chemically altered by sleep to connect them with the Dreamscape.  Morpheus tricks the dreamers by posing as other people in the Dreamscape, so the dreamer has difficulty identifying the other dreamers from the characters Morpheus emulates.  But sometimes a dreamer can become aware within the dream, and this is known as lucid dreaming.  It often provides incredibly detailed and beautiful perceptions granted by Phantasos, while Morpheus loses his power to emulate other people, so that the other dreamers in the dreamscape are revealed.  The lucid period is a chemical limbo that does not generally last very long, although it can seem long to the dreamer.

Chemicals produced by the Thalamus (dark oval in diagram above) redirect the "ization" (identity area of the brain) from connection to the conscious portion of the brain, over to the sub-conscious portion.  This is symbolized above by the red loop around the ization stem going to the red prongs attached to the sub-conscious region.  One lobe of the large brown region is used for language processing and the other for perception construction.  Which side has perception dictates handedness.  During sleep, the short term memory stored under the perception and language lobes is transferred to the long term memory, and the short term memory is cleared for future storage.  Event images and sounds are recorded in the Akasha (the projected Ether of the Sun), and a link to the record is placed in the memory.  This is why when memory loss occurs it is possible to recover by scanning the Akashic record for familiar items, and re-establishing the links.

There is a second deeper stage of chemical change during sleep (the so-called REM state of rapid eye movement), which takes the dreamer deeper into the sub-conscious for short periods multiple times during the sleep.  During this deeper sleep Morpheus takes control of the voluntary motor area of the brain, which is when dreamers may thrash in bed, or dream-walk.  Sometimes the Thalamus gets out of sync and initiates the process of awakening from light sleep while the deep has not been reversed.  In this case, although conscious, the person may be unable to gain voluntary control of their body for a period of time until the Thalamus can end the deep sleep, which takes longer than awakening from the light sleep.

Remembering dreams can be difficult because normally, out of light-sleep, the chemical change initiated by the Thalamus happens quickly.  In awaking, the Thalamus neutralizes the chemical alteration, producing a short interim period when the dreams can be clearly remembered, but once conscious ization is re-established, the memory of the dream quickly fades.

In the lexicon of romanticized categorization, there are said to be two gates from which dreams emerge.  One gate is constructed of two massive ivory tusks, and from this emerges the false dreams that exploit the foibles of mankind.  The other gate is constructed of two massive polished horns, and from this flows true dreams that are often prophetic in nature.

Thanatos: The Mortal Destiny

The word destiny is derived from destination, the end point.  It does not refer to what will be accomplished, or which events will transpire in a lifetime.  People like to say that certain things were destined to happen, but that is hindsight.  Even the goddess Tyche (fortune) is not a predictor of events, but rather is responsible for the capricious acts of nature that are interpreted as good and bad luck.  Apollo was said to speak through the sibyl Pythia of Delphi, who in breathing the decomposing fumes from the remains of the Python that Apollo slew and left there, raved with ecstatic speech that was in turn interpreted by the priests of the temple into ambiguous oblique predictions designed to be easily interpreted after the fact to conform to subsequent events.  In fact, the widespread belief of the ancient world was that the future was uncertain and its book was unwritten.  This is in line with the concept of the Creator as having designed the cosmos with built-in underlying uncertainty in order to be entertained by watching the process without knowing the exact outcome beforehand.

The Thread of Life

The Moirai are 4 daughters of Nyx commonly called The Fates.  They are analogous to the four seasons caused by the tilted axis in relation to the orbit of the Earth around the Sun (which was clearly known to the ancient civilizations).  In their personalization, the Moirai are "spinsters", depicted as elderly matronly women, but the term "spinster" relates to clothing.  Clotho (spring) is the "spinner" who feeds out the thread of life from the distaff of endless spirit to the spindle of personal existence.  Lachesis (summer) is the "allotter" who measures the thread as it is played out.  Atropos (fall), the "inevitable", cuts the thread when the measure is reached (when death occurs), and records the manner of death on the scroll of destiny, flagging such that would tip the scale of retribution.  The three of them are severe and stern matronly women with cauterized hearts, knowing there is no escape from mortality.  Death itself is the 4th sister Aisa (winter), the corpse.

The father of the Moirai is said to be Erebus, the shadow of darkness.  Erebus is the roving night side of Earth, which is in the shadow of the planet.

Dawn: The Ascendant Soul (Sol)

The Earth rotates, and as such at all times somewhere on the Earth's surface it is dawn, meaning the Sun is ascendant on the horizon.  Dawn is the birth of the day.  The (almost) eternal light of the Sun is like the soul of Man, and each day is like the passing of a generation of men, such that the soul of Man is (almost) eternal, and connects individuals, not only through reproduction, but in the spiritual realm as well.

At all points on the surface of Earth (except the poles), various star constellations, whether visible by night or hidden by day, are ascending on the horizon.  In Natal Astrology, at the time of birth the stars rising are the personal Ascendant, and consequently in Esoteric Astrology this represents the personality.  A general esoteric interpretation of the Signs might be that Aries is headstrong, Taurus is stubborn, Gemini is conflicted, Leo is arrogant, Cancer is dependent, Virgo is virtuous, Libra is balanced, Scorpio is intense, Sagittarius is idealistic, Capricorn is practical, Aquarius is ethereal, and Pisces is spiritual.

Curiously, an individual cannot perceive their own personality, because it consists of the opinions held by others.  One cannot avoid having a personality because it is the property of others.  You can modify yourself to influence these opinions, but that is only a mask, and you may well end up wearing a different mask for each person you interact with.  You can use well-established techniques to endear others to you, like pretending interest in their lives by memorizing relatives' names and various details, or by generating an ingenuous impression you like them.  It's called being a phony.  It only works in a barren society (like in Divided Dumbfuckistan) where an alienated population has been relegated to zombie-like detachment from the general pervasive corruption.
